Hither'due south a trick I learned a couple of years ago about splitting the block. Instead of using a pocketknife to cut the block, yous can use dental floss. Simply use a long piece of floss to line up the floss with heart peak of the cake, all the way around the border. When the floss is all lined upwards, loop the ends over each other and pull through. This will requite one perfect slice through the block 2 make ii thin cakes!

THE CAKE CAME OUT Neat. VERY Piece of cake. I Have READ A FEW OF THE REVIEWS, AND ONE HAD SAID THAT THE CUSTARD WAS LUMPY. THE ONLY LUMPS I GOT WERE FROM THE SIDES OF THE PAN WHEN I STIRRED THEM IN. I HAD USED A LARGE SERATED Knife TO Split THE Cake AND It CAME OUT FINE. I HAD Besides USED BAKING POWDER INSTEAD OF THE BLOCKS. 3T OF Pulverization AND 1T OF OIL EQUALS ane 1oz BLOCK CHOCOLATE. I THOUGHT THERE WAS ENOUGH GLAZE. I ALSO QUARTERED BANANAS And then SLICED THEM AND PUT THEM ON TOP OF THE CUSTARD IN THE Centre. I TOSSED THEM Advisedly WITH JUST Plenty LEMON JUICE, Nearly 2t Then THEY DIDNT Plow Chocolate-brown. THIS WAS A Slap-up Improver. I Promise THIS HELPS AND ENCOURAGES YOU. BAKE ON GIRLS!! GOD HAS A WONDERFUL Program FOR EACH OF YOUR LIVES. HE CREATED You. HE LOVES Yous. ASK HIM TO REVEAL HIMSELF TO YOU, AND I Hope YOU HE WILL. Starting time LOOKING FOR HIM IN EVERYTHING! HE IS THERE. I can't speak for the icing or the filling, simply this cake recipe is wonderful and moist. However, I prefer to bake it in 2 layers rather than split it, so if yous are like me, only enter xviii servings for the amount and striking calculate, and this should give you lot enough concoction for 2 ix inch pans (use 2 eggs instead of 1 1/2 though). Some advice on pastry foam: mixing the sugar and cornstarch in the commencement is essential to smoothe foam, but there is also another problem. Fifty-fifty subsequently you remove the pan from heat, the custard continues to cook, and thus, if you practise not go along to stir afterwards, you may still become lumps. To gainsay this, chill a metal or ceramic mixing bowl in your freezer before starting time the cooking process. One time thickened, remove the custard to the bowl, mixing all the while, and stir until the custard is no longer hot. (If you have a stand mixer, yous tin use the accompanying mixing bowl and mix on low speed until absurd). For the topping, I used a night chocolate ganache (1c scalding hot evaporated milk or cream, 8oz seventy% dark chocolate, 1/4c sugar: pour the hot milk over the chocolate and sugar; stir to combine; chill until spreadable consistency.) Hope this helps!

This was a GREAT recipe! I did make a couple of changes. I used my own custard recipe which is basically the same as this ane merely the quantities are different and I wanted a chip more. I also used can frosting for the summit simply considering I bought iv cans at Sams the other day and had it on hand. If you are pressed for time, I would recommend tin frosting simply please don't fudge on the cake. The cake was delicious and I cannot imagine any box mix being every bit practiced. I want to add a couple of hints to the custard. It isn't necessary to add the eggs at the end. It is fine to add them to the starting time. All custard recipes say to add together them at the stop but as someone who learned to make custard on a chair in her grandmother's kitchen, adding them with the rest of the ingredients is OK. Likewise, once information technology boils, allow information technology boil for about iii minutes. One minute is not long plenty. It must boil for 3 in gild to completely set for a pie.

Excellent Block. I always mix sugar and cornstarch outset until it is a fine powder (for any recipe). Then I stired in the milk with no trouble with lumps. I ever use a rubber spatula with a flat lesser to mix any kind of custard/pudding. This keeps custard from forming lumps too. I cheated by using box cake mix also, but followed directions exactly for the foam. Thanks for the great recipe.

I made this today as a birthday block and was very pleased about the results. I used a gilded yellow cake mix (as I can't seem to get my homemade cakes that light yet) but followed the directions for the filling and glaze. It had but the right amount of sweet, the richness of the chocolate just balancing the custard. I used about a quarter cup of chocolate chips in the glaze and microwaved the fries and the butter until melted then added the carbohydrate, vanilla and water until I got the correct consistency. All of the altogether party guests had great things to say! I will make this once again.
05/20/2012
This is the aforementioned recipe equally in my erstwhile Betty Crocker cookbook. Excellent season and easy to make. The only thing I practise unlike is add together a tablespoon of butter with the vanilla once the custard is cooked.
07/02/2003
Perfect Perfect Perfect. The exact recipe I was looking for!! Was not any trouble at all!! I did whisk the custard instead of stir it, and also used semisweet chocolate instead of unsweetened. The cake is not hard to make- and I would definitely do that instead of buy a yellow box cake, I just don't think it would be the same. I had virtually 10 dissimilar people try it and they loved information technology!!

I made this Boston Cream Pie recipe that my female parent requested for her birthday. I was looking for it in my cookbooks till I found this site. I made it exactly as it said. This recipe was just what I was looking for. It was fabulous! Slicing the block was the hard part, was a little hard. But other than that information technology was very tasteful. My brother thought I bought it from a bakery! LOL
03/11/2003
I took a shortcut and used a yellow boxed cake mix, but this was devine. The custard filling and chocolate glaze were the best and taste just like I had gotten it from a bakery. I used a wire wisk to continuously stir the custard and it came out lump gratis. I could utilise a niggling help on cutting the block in half, but overall, this was an fantabulous recipe and I will definitely make once again and again.
01/22/2007
This was ok for us. The custard didn't take the flavor I was hoping for, and for all the work, I think I'll probably stick to the boston cream pie box mix that the super market sells. It's a zillion times easier and has better flavour.
09/27/2009
I used butter instead of shortening in the cake. It turned out great
02/fifteen/2007
I have been looking for the perfect Boston Cream Pie recipe (a childhood favorite of my husbands) for years. Many cakes are dry out or tasteless or the filling is gummy. but- We LOVED THIS RECIPE! The cake was tender and the filling was light. Add 3 TB. butter to the filling for more than flavor. Parchment paper is a must. I will make this again and again!
05/14/2012
This review is for the block and filling simply. I used a different frosting recipe. I doubled this cake recipe to yield two nine inch layers, and my only change was adding 1 loving cup of sour cream and only using one/2 cup milk (for 2 layers, retrieve). This made the cake fluffier and more moist...actually bang-up.
03/12/2004
My offset Boston Cream Pie recipe. I found information technology to exist very proficient. It was thinner than expected, merely light and sugariness without overwhelming. When making the foam filling, to foreclose lumps from the cornstarch, I dissolved the cornstarch completely with the milk cold in the bucket kickoff. Then I added the other ingredients and turned on the heat. For the glaze, I doubled the chocolate and butter since I prefer a richer chocolatey taste.
07/30/2006
Amazing!! My family and I loved information technology. Afterwards reading some other reviews, I was sure to put some parchment on the lesser of the block pan. It didn't stick at all and I had no trouble splitting it in 2 like many other people did. Y'all just have to be sure the cake is cooled completly before splitting it or else it really is hard. I made the custard earlier in the day, cooled it, and so refrigerated information technology for a few hours. Information technology set up perfectly. I besides thought the glaze was peachy. Mine took a little more than two T water to make it the right consistancy. This recipe is a bit of a procedure, simply definitly worth it. However, I wouldn't suggest making this if you are a first time baker.
08/06/2002
This block was very good. I followed the recipe closely and information technology turned out perfectly.
10/02/2008
The block & glaze part of this recipe is wonderful, but I can't vouch for the filling. I used a separate Pastry Cream recipe from this site for the filling instead. All in all, a lovely and pretty block. I split into two small 6 inch cakes and they turned out beautifully.
10/20/2010
Followed the directions just as they are. Block turned out perfect for my son's altogether. Very moist. Will make this again!
01/02/2012
Only change I made was to use butter instead of shortening in the cake. The cake was a large hitting for New Twelvemonth'due south. I have made several different recipes over the years, and this is our favorite. As others have mentioned, use a whisk when making the puddding to polish out any lumps that may form. I put plastic wrap on top of the pudding while information technology cooled to avoid a skin forming. I am non certain if this was necessary, but didn't want to take any chances. The icing turned out peachy!!!
02/19/2011
I read through the reviews just to troubleshoot before I attempted this with my vii year one-time son. I was amazed at how many people used a box cake mix and or used a different filling or glaze. I did not--we used the whole recipe. This was kind of a last minute decision for Remember Grampy Day as this was 1 of his favorite desserts. The recipe was uncomplicated enough to follow only non actually one of our favorites. The block was crumbly but tasty merely the filling seemed to be missing something (perhaps another egg?) and the glaze didn't seem to work out. Information technology was fun and we laughed at our attempt as information technology turned out kind of.....ugly only we had fun and that's really what matters in the end. Next time, we'll but try a different recipe.
10/24/2010
This was good, merely not the best. I really loved the block. That deserves five stars! However, the filling was practiced, but could utilize a little more flavor and the frosting, wasn't the best. Overall, the block was good and I would make it again, I would just change it a little flake.
01/22/2012
The cake part is awesome, easy and well worth making! All I can say to practise differently with the cake is to bring the eggs and milk to room temperature along with creaming the sugar and shortening before adding the remaining ingredients. You can also change out the shortening for butter, and that is a matter of preference. I accept washed both, and prefer the butter. Otherwise the cake is perfect. The first time I fabricated the custard filling, it never set up up, and I cooked it as directed. The second time I made it worked, but I had to cook information technology much longer than indicated 3 to 4 minutes more than. The flavor is just 'ok' to me, and I am looking for custard to rave well-nigh. The coat does brand a difficult crush, but if yous accept a good serrated knife to get through the glaze, you're practiced to go. I'thou definitely keeping the cake role, but will continue to look for custard and coat recipes. Thanks for sharing the recipe – much appreciated!
11/15/2010
sooooooo yummy!!! followed directions and turned out great the only thing unlike was I used my Grandma Sweetpea's famous fudge frosting recipe.
02/03/2012
I made these into cupcakes using my debbie Meyer filled cupcake pan. They turned out awesome! I had plenty custard and chocolate for 3 batches of cupcakes. The only alter I made was I added 1 Tablespoon of butter to the custard forth with the vanilla, every bit per some other recipe. Anybody raved about these, they are truly a wonderful dessert.o
01/25/2010
This cake was very tasty. Information technology had a wonderful flavor and was very moist. I was tempted to eat it all before I added the custard and topping! The custard was a proficient consistency and flavor. I didn't have the squares and used cocoa instead, and then I messed it up a picayune flake. Besides, I felt that it needed a little more of the topping, and then next fourth dimension I'll multiply the ingredients by one and a half. I poured half of the batter into each of ii cake pans, because I don't like to cut cakes in half. That worked really well. For those who idea that the recipe was "tasteless", you may be using generic vanilla. I have found that when I utilize good vanilla, it really affects the flavor of my desserts.
11/twenty/2001
My husband loved this recipe! I changed it slightly by using half banana excerpt and half vanilla for the custard. I thought the banana was a footling strong, but my husband said he could hardly tast it. I have been told that my taste buds are very sensitive.
09/25/2008
This is a really good cake.
11/27/2005
Later on removing the block from oven allow it cool 10 minutes in the pan before loosening information technology and then very gingerly turning it over onto the cooling rack. I had to re-bake the cake because on my commencement endeavor information technology fell completely apart when I tried to remove it from the pan immediately after I'd baked information technology. I made almost 1/4 more than icing than the recipe stated but I would recommend sticking with the amount in the recipe every bit I thought that the extra chocolate icing overwhelmed the other flavors in the block. Though information technology was a lot of work, it was succulent, and it tasted even ameliorate after being in the fridge a couple of days.
01/14/2001
My husband loves Boston Cream Pie and he really enjoyed this ane. I tried experimenting a chip. I used cake flour, three egg whites, and light margarine for the cake. I did not have a 9-inch pan so I put it in two 8-inch pans. I baked it for less time. I used three oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips w/2 tbls. butter and i/2c confectioners' sugar forth w/vanilla and some water. The block came out really thin and dense. It was delicious!
01/eighteen/2012
Cheated by using a box yellow cake and Irish Cream Creamer in identify of milk, and used chocolate chips instead of squares. It came out devine, highly recommend.
04/03/2000
Kids love the cake and custard. only the chocolate coat probably needs to be thinned out a little more. Also, don't bake over 35 min. even if toothpick is not perfectly clean.
04/09/2011
My daughter saw a Boston foam pie in an add, and I wanted to show her we could make our ain. Big mistake. I am actually experienced at cakes, but I followed the recipe exactly and came out with a crumbly cake that I had to remove the crust from considering it stuck to my well greased and floured pan, and information technology was thick and crusty. I put information technology in the freezer for 10 minutes which made it easier to dissever. The custard is fine, the chocolate frosting had likewise strong a cocoa flavor for my taste so I added a half a tin can of store bought chocolate icing. I was disappointed and won't be making this recipe over again.
11/24/2003
I've made this a couple of times (using block mixes, instead of the cake recipie provided. It came out really well, except the kickoff time my custard was a bit lumpy. The 2nd time it was excellent. Information technology'due south good enough that I'm planning on making it for thanksgiving this year.
02/xv/2009
Expert, too mixed cornstarch, table salt and sugar until fine powder, cake was a little sparse and difficult to cut. Make certain to use clear vanilla then custard is squeamish color, also micro the chocolate
07/15/2012
add a trivial brown sugar to your custard and it will work out..
09/05/2003
I added a shot (1oz) of Irish Cream to the milk amounts of the custard and the block. Fantastic taste! Also, I cheated and used canned frosting.
06/03/2002
Information technology tastes really expert. But at that place was something missing to the sense of taste. I am very fussy about Boston Foam Pie. My family loved it.So I will use this recipe again merely will experiment to get the exact taste I'k looking for. Cheers
xi/23/2001
I wasn't very impressed with this pie. The block didn't take much flavor to it and was difficult to cut in half--it was entirely too soft, and just vicious apart. I couldn't get the lumps out of the pudding no matter how hard I tried, and once the pie was in the refrigerator, the coat got so hard, you lot couldn't slice the pie without the top layer bouncing off. I made it for Thanksgiving and no one really liked information technology--non one person who tried it finished their piece. I won't make this again.
04/ten/2007
I've made this twice, starting time fourth dimension I wasn't overly impressed with the custard. This time I added an egg yolk and extra ane/2tsp vanilla and was much happier with the results. Whisking constantly while cooking prevents lumps from forming from the corn starch. Not sure what I did but this last time I made the cake information technology came out desperately; so in a pinch (FYI) the betty crocker yellow cake mix works well with the other components ;)
08/26/2004
Very good recipe, I loved information technology. It is a bit challenging to slice the block through considering pocketknife merely wants to become aslant:-) I recommend to notch the side of the cake with serrated pocketknife nearly 1" deep all the style around to make sure the cut is clean and precise and then cut through. Too, it was skillful idea every bit others hither recommended, to dissolve starch in milk before heating information technology and use the whisk, this style custard comes out very smoothen and not lumpy. Delicious cake, married man loved information technology, I'll arrive again and recommend anybody to attempt it.
04/28/2001
Smashing if you have the fourth dimension and some skill
x/01/2012
Very time-consuming recipe. Lots of muddied dishes and time for a mediocre result. The filling and the frosting were good, but the block was also crumbly and dry for me. Baked it exactly 30 minutes, cooled in pan 10 min., removed to rack to end cooling and it crumbled terribly when I cutting information technology. Fifty-fifty the top split! I can't help but think a boxed cake would have been meliorate than that one. Would utilise the filling and frosting recipes over again, but would non make this complete recipe again.
06/26/2010
i fabricated this for my bf'south birthday and it was crawly! I followed the recipe for the block, filling, and glaze exactly except i added 1 1/2 TBS Cocoa powder to the filling and i used a dark chocolate bar for the glaze instead of the unsweetened baking chocolate. The cake was and so yummy, information technology was the first time i fabricated a cake from scratch and i dont recall ill ever go dorsum to using box mixes :) and then like shooting fish in a barrel
04/17/2005
Fantabulous recipe! My husband loved information technology and and then did I. This is definitely a keeper. I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out corking.
01/06/2008
Delicious and very piece of cake to make. I also used a yellow cake mix from the box as suggested past another user on this site. Both the custard and the glaze turned out excellent and the whole matter was fast and like shooting fish in a barrel to make. I definiely recommend this is anyone who is looking for a unique only piece of cake cake recipe. I made information technology for my boyfriend's birthday and it was a hit all effectually!
05/01/2007
I'd charge per unit this recipe a ***** for taste - I had to alter it then much information technology's not actually the same recipe. We love Boston Foam Pie - but I don't like the faux rum flavor of the store bought kind. My changes give a light rum season not the fake. Soooo, what I did was to use a yellow block mix (with 1/ii c rum, ane/2 c water & i/ii c oil, 4 eggs and 3 3/4 oz parcel of vanilla instant pudding). So after that was baked, cut the cake to make 2 layers rather than one. Doubled the custard recipe to fill up 2 layers (had to utilize more than corn starch to thicken it) and so glazed information technology with the original chocolate recipe. Now that is a ***** Boston Cream Pie. I didn't find this recipe likewise difficult to brand and I accept tried the boxed one - ewww it wasn't very nice. This is crawly compared to the store made or boxed version.
05/thirteen/2007
I take tried so many recipes off this site and always ben pleased fifty-fifty though I may have had to weak things to my gustation....however, this was the WORST cake I accept always had. I tin't find i redeeming point virtually this recipe. The cake is very bland and very heavy and dense. The custard also has no taste and was very difficult to set up. I had to add another egg and used Irish gaelic Foam to flavour the custard to brand information technology squeamish. The chocolate glaze is entirely too much, cut downwards the chocolate a bit or better yet, employ the Caroline's Fudge Frosting recipe. All in all, when ane has to change a recipe and so much that y'all are combing three different recipes, you can no longer rate it as good. I've never given whatever recipe bad reviews but this one just needs so much more work.
04/12/2008
I used a box cake mix because of others stating information technology was better. I loved the icing and the filling.
06/fifteen/2010
good merely hard to make. (Not a fault of the recipe - just of the boston cream pie)
07/fourteen/2004
I was very pleased with the upshot of this recipe. I needed more than chocolate to coat the cake, and then I doubled the chocolate coating part. The cream turned out great, and the cakes were light, fluffy, and succulent. My only complaint is that it took and then long to make and was eaten up and so fast! Very impressive looking and succulent, will make it for a holiday/family gathering.
03/17/2008
This cake was delicious. My family unit loved it. The only thing I did differently was that I used dark chocolate for the glaze.
02/21/2010
The custard was OK, but nil special. The block was not skilful. It was simply about 1 inch high! The texture was off and just didn't taste also great. The chocolate sauce was the perfect corporeality and tasted fine, but once more, nothing special.
08/24/2009
Really really skillful. Made information technology for my 11 yr former daughter's bday. She loved it as did the whole family. The block cruel apart subsequently I cut the layers, merely it may take been also warm even so...My custard wasn't runny at all, so make sure y'all melt it a skilful infinitesimal to gear up.
12/08/2010
I followed the recipe to exactly and the custard was bland and the block was the worst! Dry out and crumbly and admittedly no flavor. I'll never attempt this 1 again.
01/12/2011
This Boston Cream Pie was Neat!! Followed the recipe and couldn't ask for a better result. Would recommend this to my friends and family. Endeavour it for yourself. I've had problems with chocolate icing in the past, merely this turned out swell. Substituted bakers cocoa 3 tbsp to i tbsp oil instead of the squares. Just mix them together in the pot, then add together butter, etc... - no problem. Bake and enjoy!!
11/03/2009
Very tasty, I feel it needs more vanilla season in the custard, next fourth dimension I will make 1/2 batch of custard and add vanilla pudding. Used the leftovers to make triffle and it was splendid.
10/15/2010
I made this recipe as stated only this recipe does not represent the true creamy dessert. The chocolate topping turned into a hardened shell which was hard to cut. The custard was good by itself when first made but the consistency turned lumpy and thick once it cooled and it sucked all the moisture out of the cake as it continued to turn into a thick gelatin mass. There was nothing creamy about this block at all.
08/10/2009
I read the reviews. No parchment newspaper on manus, so I skipped it. I cutting the shortening into the flour mixture with a pastry blender, which worked well. The cake was delicious, but it wouldn't come out of the pan! I bought parchment paper, made another block, this time using butter instead of shortening, also cutting in the butter, it was really good. I fabricated the filling in a double banality (I have scorched many custards in a saucepan!). This didn't work very well, every bit it never boiled. The taste was amazing, although a bit on the runny side (it looked nothing similar the photo!!). The glaze was perfect. The recipe itself is a 5. My technique needs some work! I will definitely try this recipe once again. I know it tasted adept, because fifty-fifty the crumbs got eaten!! Next time, I would like it to have a better presentation.
07/xi/2004
This is an old Better Crocker recipe. My family unit loves it, and I have fabricated information technology countless times. The cake is very moist, the filling delicious and vanilla, and the glaze very chocolatey! Sometimes I use 2 egg whites in the cake and reserve the yolks for the filling. Utilise a big serrated pocketknife to separate the layers.
04/13/2006
I only needed the cream (or i similar to call it custard) part of this recipe for a three layered block my mama makes. The constant stiring gave my arm a good work out. I was so happy that information technology didnt stick to the bottom of the pan as it was boiling. I used a soft rubber spatular to stir as some other review sugested and information technology worked like a charm. It is not a sweet recipe which i think is just right, it is best to leave the sweet part to the actual sponge block is tin can keep with. Yous tin can likewise put information technology in individual cups one time cooked let cool and serve with caramel sauce. LOVE IT!
02/06/2008
I didn't like this recipe, I honey to broil simply I found this recipe to merely all around flop out. If I had to make once more I would substitute a regular chocolate buttercream icing.
01/17/2010
This always comes out great.
01/21/2007
Lovely recipe! Easy plenty for a novice to brand a decedant treat. I was peculiarly fond of the icing!
09/18/2010
Delicious and adequately easy! I tried this recipe for the first time today for my blood brother's altogether and it was a huge hit! What was especially nice was that both adults and kids enjoyed the block. I did not adjust - tasty as is! The cake was easy to make (and I fifty-fifty had all of the ingredients already) and while information technology was baking, I made the custard. Afterwards the cake and custard cooled, the chocolate coat was quick to brand and and so the cake was assembled. I will DEFINITELY bake over again!
02/02/2006
This was delicious! I used parchment newspaper to line the lesser of the cake pan and let the pan cool before attempting to remove the block. Slicing the block in ii was alot easier than I expected. I also constitute Robin Gail'south advice (in a previous review) about cooking the filling very helpful. Very tasty - I will be making this again!
05/24/2014
WOW - This recipe is definitely a keeper! The only thing I did differently was that I used two viii" pans so that I didn't have to try to cut the cake evenly for layering. Of course information technology didn't take as long to bake (I recollect 20-25 minutes instead). I dear making cakes from scratch :)
11/12/2011
Of course, Boston Cream Pie isn't pie at all but layered block that has an egg custard middle for filling. This is not a bad recipe, but yous tin use flour instead of corn starch for a creamier egg filling (exist careful how you temper your eggs or you'll stop upwardly with scrambled eggs). You can besides use "chocolate chips" for the semi-sweet chocolate equally long as you sentinel your temperature. The cooks who substituted a box mix should be spanked. Go real and brand it from scratch. It isn't that difficult. BCP was a favorite of mine growing up. Requite your children those same memories, moms... and don't purchase a Duncan Heinz or Betty Crocker and say its the same, crusade it isn't!
09/nineteen/2004
Wow, the chocolate glaze on this was fabulous. The recipe didn't make equally much every bit we'd similar, and then I went dorsum and made a second batch and poured that over the elevation of the cake. Delicious and just the right corporeality for us. I used a boxed Duncan Hines Yellow Cake Mix equally a shortcut, and no one could tell the departure. Likewise simply fabricated it into two layers rather than attempting to split the layers which can exist tiresome. Information technology turned out peachy. Made this for my brother's birthday party, and it was a hit. The only thing I would change is to add a scrap more vanilla to the custard - didn't have much flavor to us, but it was a dainty consistency. I dissolved the corn starch in the milk before putting it over the oestrus as others have recommended - no lumps. This one is a keeper.
03/23/2012
i owed a boston cream pie to our pastor for doing usa a favor. he grew upwardly in boston and it is his fave dessert. i've never had a boston cream pie b4, and then i didnt know what to expect. i messed upwards on the cake the first time by not mixing it enough. second time around turned out smashing! i personally didnt find it the best, simply everyone else loved it! it was and so rich and sweet! our pastor loved evry bite! thx!
03/01/2007
Tasty recipe, but difficult. My sister fabricated it. She had problem assembling it: the cake was crumbly, the glaze had cooled too much, etc. It was also the first fourth dimension making custard and it came out with brown fleck (stove too hot?). Looks aren't everything though, and my dad loved it.
02/09/2010
Loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
06/14/2008
I merely used the block recipe for this 1 and the pastry cream of another one. The cake was superb, the pastry cream wasn't thick plenty and ran all over the place. Side by side time, when I have an entire day to devote to Boston cream pie, I will use this pastry cream recipe, although I find the technique a piddling odd.
eleven/05/2008
I followed the recipe exactly and something went incorrect. This block didn't really rise, it ended up being most ane inch thick. Well, I frosted information technology with the chocolate and and then used the pastry foam (that I had leftover from another recipe) as a 'dipping sauce'. LOL. My guests were ok with it, it tasted fine.
09/23/2014
Actually good block but not plenty. Make two cakes and use the same amount of filling and ganache.
01/24/2012
it was practiced but definately not store bought Boston Foam....i used vanilla pudding for the center...
06/24/2000
One of my favorite of the Boston Cream Pie recipes because information technology calls for one pan. Though splitting a unmarried cake may exist challenging for some, it sure cuts down on make clean-up afterwards baking.
03/01/2008
Information technology was skilful and very sweet. If y'all have a sugariness molar this would take care of information technology!
03/09/2008
A satisfying combination of chocolate, vanilla custard and cake. I merely used chocolate ganache instead of the glaze.

Information technology was a diaster splitting the block. I tried dental floss. I even fabricated a second cake and tried once more. I retrieve next fourth dimension I will read the reviews commencement. As well I think brand a double batch for the block so y'all have 2 layers and don't have to carve up. Too need to double the topping.

Made this terminal night for my husbands birthday, everyone loved it! The only modify I made was using evaporated cane sugar instead of white sugar and using unbleached all purpose flour. I also had to heat the glaze later I mixed in the powdered sugar to go it to the right consistency. Everyone loved that the block itself wasn't overly sweet, especially considering information technology's filled with custard and covered in chocolate coat! I'll definitely make this again!

I had no problems with the block, but I did use a diff. recipe for the pastry foam. My family enjoyed this.

I made this cake for my Dad on male parent's mean solar day considering it's his favourite, information technology was exellent. I used pudding clot-o for filling though, because it didn't go very proficient reveiws and I had some in the house. Also, I baked it in a silicone pan and waited ten-15 minutes before removing it.

I was unimpressed with this recipe. Even after refrigeration the custard never set properly. The flavor was no improve than a boring grocery store version. I wouldn't make it again.

Over the final several years, this cake recipe has get the standard altogether cake for every family fellow member. I've tried tweaking information technology here and there, but I always end upwardly back at the recipe exactly as information technology is written. It is admittedly delicious! The chocolate icing does take some patience. Don't be in a hurry... keep the temperature low when melting the chocolate. It takes longer, only the icing is more manageable. The icing is meant to be firm; it is non soft and fluffy. Simply so we similar it that way! Very rich. Very delicious.

I made this for the beginning fourth dimension this evening, used a different pastry cream recipe as suggested, and the cake came out Succulent. My mother, who is a big fan of boston foam's, loved it. Absolute success : ) Just stir the custard constantly to avoid lumps!

Overall, groovy. I didn't like the cake part as much. I've only ever fabricated two yellow cakes from scratch, and so far, prefer the boxed yellow. I know...weird. The custard and glaze were crawly, though, but I don't think I'd make this again, only because it'southward entirely too much work for average results.

Start off, I didn't make the filling considering I got lazy and used vanilla pudding mix instead. Simply the cake (and glaze, simply mostly the cake!) was very skilful. No complaints at all! I baked it every bit cupcakes; it made 11 and they broiled for xv minutes.

My cake did not rise at all and was very apartment and dense, although the flavor was cracking. Rather than split information technology, I made another cake using the same recipe. The custard and chocolate topping turned out nicely.

I've made this 2x. I was convinced that I did something wrong the 1st time. The cake falls autonomously and crumbles and it doesn't taste adept. The cream had NO Season ... I had to brand some vanilla pudding and add it to the pastry cream. I ended upwards using (gasp) a boxed cake mix.
12/26/2011
Cake was very good and easier to brand then a box mix. The filling was enough as I made it in a deep eight inch pan, if I made the nine inch called for in the recipe I would have made a scrap more. I besides used butter to brand the block instead of shortening. I made a quick ganache (melted semi-sweetness chocolate and heavy cream) for the frosting. I think this cake is very easy, and tasty.

Great results.

Didn't care for the icing. Volition find a different recipe for that adjacent time but the block was wonderful.
07/12/2008
hubby said this was the "bomb" i followed the recipe to a "T" .
02/05/2007
I followed the recipe to the letter, and it turned out skillful. My only problem was the custard. I could hardly gustatory modality it. I would've liked it to stand out more. Side by side time I volition do as someone else suggested, and put a little Irish Cream in it. The glaze was wonderful though!
03/13/2008
The block was terrible, the shortening fabricated information technology taste really bad, even though the custard and the chocolate were really skillful.
03/15/2007
I've been looking for a great custard recipe and now I've institute it!I didn't want the cake this time, only afterwards having the custard its side by side on my listing.
01/29/2007
Perfect! I followed the directions exactly and my wife and I both thought information technology was ane of the best cakes nosotros've ever had.
05/09/2004
This was really good. I make simply a few changes: I doubled the chocolate glaze because I like a thick layer of chocolate, I folded iv oz of thawed frozen whipped topping into the cream filling later on it had cooled completely--that created a fluffy cream middle that was only devine! Made this for the in-laws, they liked it!! Thanks!
